On October 17, 2009, five cadets and six senior members, coming mostly from the Bootheel Composite Squadron in Malden, Missouri, traveled to Jonesboro, Arkansas, to join that squadron for its annual “Safety Down Day” event at the invitation of their squadron commander Major David Wilkins. Seven senior members, mostly pilots, gave safety presentations related to aviation issues, including crew resource management with appropriate delegation of tasks, situational awareness, aircraft icing, checklist importance, and simply doing tasks correctly, to name just a few. Interesting stories were added to the well-prepared lectures which enhanced the importance of the discussions. The Jonesboro squadron provided coffee and donuts in the morning and grilled hotdogs and other fixin’s for lunch. After noon, a Jonesboro air crew and Jonesboro/Malden ground team searched for a practice ELT. During the day’s event, many participants agreed that SE Missouri and NE Arkansas squadrons would both benefit from combined ES training and continued CAP associations. Ideas are being discussed to do just that! Submitted by Capt Rita LaVanchy, MO WG Group IV ESO. |
