Wing NewsCadet Major Joshua Carr of the Springfield Regional Composite Squadron recently was elected as the National Cadet Advisory Council Recorder during the CAP Annual Conference and National Boards in San Antonio Texas.  Cadet Carr also serves as the North Central Region CAC Chairperson and representative to the National CAC.

Cadet Carr, the youngest cadet on the National CAC, was honored to be elected and looking forward to continuing to serve.  “It really is amazing the level of influence the National CAC has on the direction of Cadet Programs,” he said.  “For instance, while there we had several talks with the Cadet Programs senior officers regarding the National Cadet Competition.”

There are many goals for the Cadet Advisory Council, but Cadet Carr is quick to note that they can only be attained if cadet participation is high and senior officer support is present.  “The CAC can only be effective if delegates participate in the meetings and really take ownership.  As cadets, we’re not just valuable as future leaders, we have an opportunity to be leaders now if we present well thought out responses to issues or concerns our commanders may have.  If the cadets participating on the CAC approach it from this perspective, and receive mentoring from their senior officers, then quite a bit can be done through this program.”

On Friday night of the conference, Cadet Carr and two other cadets spent some time with the National Commander, an astronaut, and various National staff members over dinner.  Cadet Carr chatted with General Courter about the Civic Leadership Academy, a program she helped to create.  “When we weren’t working with the CAC, the conference provided an opportunity to have many conversations with a variety of people from National and all across America.”

“Missouri Wing is very proud of Cadet Carr,” Lt Col John O’Neill, the Director of Cadet Programs commented, “and we’re very lucky to have such great cadets in our wing.”  Lt Tom Baker, the Springfield Regional Composite Squadron commander added, "We are very proud of Cadet Carr's accomplishments, and have always known he'd go far because of his commitment to hard work and helping others."

Cadet Carr was appointed to lead the North Central Region CAC following the NCR Cadet Color Guard Competition, which he helped to organize.  “Be active in more than just your meetings,” Cadet Carr recommends to all cadets, “as there are many leadership opportunities out there for people who work hard and participate actively.  Focus on your leadership development and you can excel in most any function.”

To participate in the Cadet Advisory Council, cadets should speak with their chain of command about becoming a representative.  The next Missouri Wing CAC meeting will be at Wing Conference in October.
