Colonel John A. Mais is the Missouri Wing Commander of Civil Air Patrol, a nonprofit, benevolent organization devoted to humanitarian activities, and by law the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force.
Colonel Mais has served as the Vice Commander for Missouri Wing before being selected as the Missouri Wing Commander and is currently responsible for CAP operations in the state of Missouri.
Colonel Mais was born 6 October 1947 in Kansas City Missouri. He attended Baker University and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. He graduated from Longview Community College with an Associates of Arts Degree. He is an alumni of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, Kappa Tau Chapter and is listed in the International Dean's Honor List. He served in the United States Air Force as a Telecommunications Specialist.
Colonel Mais currently works as a full time Reliability Specialist in the Engineering Department at Honeywell FM&T (Federal Manufacturing & Technologies). He has worked at numerous assignments in his 29 years at Honeywell FM&T. He started at Honeywell in 1977 as an Electrician and has worked as a Maintenance Supervisor in production support and telecommunications, Frequency Manager, Project Manager, and Reliability Specialist.
Colonel Mais first joined the Civil Air Patrol in 1990 with the Lee's Summit Composite Squadron and eventually becoming Squadron Commander. He later served as Commander of Group I. Colonel Mais currently serves as one of five members for the Civil Air Patrol’s National Committee on Homeland Security and Counter Drug Operations.
Colonel Mais's Civil Air Patrol awards include the Meritorious Service Award, one National Commanders Commendation, Four Commanders Commendations, one Unit Citation, the Gill Robb Wilson Award, the Brigadier General Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager Aerospace Education Achievement Medal, and Disaster Relief Ribbon.
Colonel Mais and his wife Carol, have two children. Bill, a Journeyman Wireman, IBEW Local 124 and Dawn, a graduate of CMSU with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fine Arts and an Associate of Arts degree in Aviation Science from the Air Force University. She is presently an Air Traffic Controller in the USAF.
